Every kid loves McDonald’s (much known in Philippines as “McDo”). Even when I was a kid it is a place like heaven if my parents brought me at McDonald’s. Especially the toys that is worthy to have and to play with your mates. As I grew, this Fast Food Chain is what everybody loves where they earn the Philippine Tag Line “Love Ko ‘To”.
I am Ash, 23 years old and I am a patron of McDonald’s for more than 15years now but not until the 14th of April 2009 when I saw a disgusting fried FLY on my French Fries. It started when my Girlfriend got out of work 5:00 P.M that day, she texted me that she wanted to eat. So I ask where to? She said she wanted French Fries from McDonalds. As everybody knows McDonald’s French Fries is the best of all the fast food competitors and Lucenahins know it as well not only for their Fries but also for their Meals, Side Dishes, Drinks, etc. Lucena City is the well known city in Quezon where McDonald’s has 2 branches (SM City Lucena and Quezon Avenue). So from her work we drove and dined at McDonald’s Quezon Avenue Branch. We arrived and ordered at exactly 6:22 P.M. (as of the official receipt) where there we plenty people around dining as well. We were served by this young lady named DANICA (on her name tag) from Counter#5 with her nice smile and with her pleasant greeting. We made decision to order Burger McDo Meal (Large Fries), new Monster Float, and an extra Burger Mcdo Sandwich. After we ordered, we sat, we ate while enjoying each other’s company, and enjoying the delicious food from McDonald’s. As we were about to leave, finished with our sandwiches and just finishing the rest of our French Fries, there, in front of our naked eye, lying in between the fries, a standard size Fly, FRIED!!!. We cannot take what we had just seen. Hunger suddenly became Anger but we both still kept cool. I cannot imagine that this company like McDonald’s Quezon Avenue Branch can’t keep good sanitation. We didn’t know what we’re going to do, if we’re just going to ignore it, if we’re just going to report it, or if we’re just going to leave. Then it just popped into my head to report it to any crew just to warn them that we found a fly on their fries so they can check it and maybe they can stop serving the fried fries to more than 20 people that are dining at that time. They just don’t know what it might do to their customer’s health. That time I cannot find any crew walking around. I saw someone but he’s at the Party Reservation Table chit-chatting with a non-staff uniformed person. While we’re waiting to get any crew’s attention, I just thought of taking a picture of it using my girlfriend’s cellular phone. The image is not that clear since her cellular phone camera is kind of not working well but you can still see a black Fly on the image that we just captured. Then suddenly this guy walked towards the garbage box to get something. Calmly I signaled him and his name was ARIES and politely told him “Boss may langaw yung French Fries nyo”. Without sorry, apology, or something the guy took the tray and brought it to the counter just few meters away from our table where I saw that he talked to a lady on a non-usual crew uniform and she happened to be the Manager Trainee. I got more frustrated with their crew. I had this question and thoughts in my mind. Do they have enough training? Do they even know what to do in this kind of situation? I’m not bragging and I don’t have any experience regarding Fast Food Crew Member but at least I have a Customer Service experience since I was a Call Center Technical Support Representative for almost 2 years. Just so you know if there is any problem regarding your service, products, or something like this, don’t forget to apologize or at least empathize with your customer. Maybe McDonald’s needs to review their training or is it just the Lucena Branch. So back to what just happened, we saw couple of crews looking at us as well as the Training Manager. I cannot translate what they just talked about but I’m sure that they just came to an answer to just replace the Fries that we ordered. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is not what I’m looking for. So the guy got back to our table with a new Large French Fries. I asked him if we can do complain about what just happened. He answered my question and left. So we planned to just go home with frustration, call it a day, and make a complain on another day. I asked my girlfriend to get a plastic bag so we can have our left over taken out. She approached the counter and talked to the same lady where we ordered and asked for a plastic bag and a lid for the drink. After she received what she asked for she told the girl that the fries that she just served us had a Fly in it. After that, my girlfriend turns her back, goes back to our table and prepared the left over. I saw the Manager Trainee getting out of the counter table and signaled Danica and said “Yari Ka” then she came approaching us and said (not exact) “May complain daw po kayo dun sa fries?” I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW LATE THAT WAS!!! This was the time I happened to know that she was a Manager Trainee. I didn’t get to know her name because when I ask for her position I found her Name Tag I just read her position but not her name and you know why? It is because she flipped her name tag over. You know how CRUEL that was? An employee with a higher position flipped over her name tag in front of a customer that’s complaining. She then told us that if anything happen to us then that’s the time that they’re going to do something. So meaning, for now it’s only replacing the Fries is what they can do. WHATTT? She asked my Girlfriend’s name, asked for her contact number as well. She thought my girlfriend was the only one who ate their French Fries Fly Flavored. She never considered me not even asked as a customer if I’ve eaten the Fries as well. She also told us if we want we can contact their landline number that can be found on the receipt but not the cellular phone number because it’s not directed to their branch? But then she retracted and then told us if we want we can. I thought so, coz just so you know it’s written on the official receipt so it’s a hotline number if in case there’s any complain like this. She then asked if we want to file a complain, I said of course but I told her maybe on another day it’s because I cannot say everything that I want to say about their BAD SERVICE!!!. Before she leaves that was the time that I heard an apology and it was TOO LATE!!!.
From the day McDonald’s started their operation in Quezon Avenue Branch Lucena City this was the first time that this happened to me and this was the first time that this happened to me in all Fast Food Chain and maybe in all restaurants that I’ve eaten. Now the questions are. Are we still safe in eating at McDonald’s particularly Quezon Avenue Branch in Lucena City?
